Wind is a major forest disturbance agent in Europe and a key component of the dynamics of many forest ecosystems, particularly in temperate forests . Large storms are complex and extreme meteorological events. These events are increased all over Europe.
The 5th of March 2015 a windstorm struck the Tuscan Region with wind that exceeded 165 km/h.
The windstorm caused extensive damage to both urban green infrastructures and forestland, especially in coniferous plantations.
geoLAB and Department of Management of Agricolture, Alimentary and Forestry Systems of University of Florence in partnership with Accademia Italiana di Scienze Forestali and Consozio LAMMA was involved in the estimation damages in Tuscany Region Forests. The projcet was financied by Tuscany Region.
In this project we have develop a new methodology to estimate forest damage using a single-date post-event airborne laser scanner data.
