Several satellite systems are available for real time monitoring of active forest fires. The most advanced is the NASA Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) that is able to provide data with a resolution of 375 meters.
For the last 24 hours in the region of South America we can count 33244 active fires. VIIRS used night images to detect hot spots, thus several active sites may belong to the same fire and only after a complete multi-temporal analysis we can estimate the burnt area.
Nevertheless the situation is incredible!
